The Big Woody

September 5, 2007

O.K I have finally got around to writing a race report! Or more accurately 2/3 of a race report!

Spent the Friday travelling down to the Forest of Dean where we would be camping at the Christchurch campsite. Bumped into Dave and Suzie, and Holgs and Em at the services on the M5 which was a welcome site as it meant they were both well on there way and hadn’t bottled out and decided to stay at home (the sensible option!). Learnt from Holgs the news that he had decided to smack his knee into the fridge the previous night for some reason and it was all strapped up. Not sure what the fridge had done to upset him but lets hope it doesn’t do it again. Is there a single appliance left in his kitchen that hasn’t caused him an accident yet?!!

Spent the afternoon setting the tent up and drove over to race HQ to see Min and to register. I thought I was nervous but Min was on a whole new level! Went and got my race pack – race numbers, chip timing device, numbers for bike and helmet, bags for transition, swim hat, free pair of shades, and various other bits and bobs. It now all seemed very real and I moved up the nervousness graph a few more notches to join Min at the petrified stage!

Went back to Christchurch for a few hours before cycling back to race HQ for the pre-race brief at 7pm followed by the pasta party where I would leave my bike for the organisers to transport to the lake in the morning and my bags in Mins tent. Good to meet up with everyone but didn’t really want to hang around so listened to the brief, had some pasta then retired back to the campsite for the night.

Alarm was set for 3.30am but I woke up at 3am after very little sleep, was panicking in case I slept through it. Had some breakfast and walked the mile to the HQ. It all seemed very surreal walking the streets at 4am with a drink in one hand and something to eat in the other. Normally this would be a bottle of lager and a donner kebab at that time of the morning but in this instance it was a bottle of lucozade sport and a jam barm! Got the coach to the lake at 4.30am, sat with Min but neither of us spoke for the entire journey…words were meaningless by this point!

Have to say I have never been so petrified of an event in my life as I was in the last 90 mins before this event. At one point I was sat outside of transition 1 on the golf course looking at everyone getting ready and I really did think of pulling out it was that bad…thankfully managed to shut the demons up in my head and got ready for the swim.

6.30am – The Swim

After Trev’s pre-swim brief it was into the lake. I was one of the last ones in – didn’t want to appear too keen! The lake was very muddy underfoot and daylight was only just beginning to break through and as I swam to the start the thought occured to me “shit, this is it!” Started near the back and managed to avoid all but a few of the feet and arms smashing into me before I found a bit of space. Got into a rhythm very early on with my stroke and breathing and it felt nice and relaxed. Did one lap of lake 1 and 18 mins later was out of lake 1 for a big smile off Mrs Holgs before running to lake 2 – in hindsight not a good move as my balance wasn’t the best and nearly fell over. It was very steep getting into lake 2 and I flew down the embankment and straight into the lake, standing on a sharp stone in the shallow water as I did. So if anyone heard swearing I apologise! The two laps went past in a bit of a blur and was still feeling good getting into lake 1 again for the last 400m – so good in fact that I overtook two swimmers which is unheard of for me!

Got dragged out of the lake and was greeted by Lunacy for the first of many times that day as she passed me my transition bag. Sat and got ready for the bike in the esteemed company of Emma and Will and saw Holgs as we wished each other luck as he went out on the bike.

Total swim time: 1:10:30 transition time 0:09:00

7.50am – Bike

Went out of transition and immediatley hit the first hill of the day. Hadn’t got the legs properly into bike mode and was severly out of breath by the top – a sign of things to come. Quite a few peeps passed me early on – obviously swimming was their weak event as they looked bloody good cyclists and quickly made ground up on there carbon bikes costing several k’s! It bought a wry smile to my face thinking I was ahead of there dream machines even if only for the first 10 miles! Soon settled into bike mode and things were going well…until we hit English Bichnor for the first time. Hell on Earth! Got the bike on the lowest gear and just had to pump the legs until we reached the top. Or rather what I thought was the top….the two false summits were not funny! The official camerman half way up the last steep bit must have got some funny pictures of faces grimacing in agony!

Got back to race HQ and got a refill of High 5, 16 miles down 96 to go! Welcome relief out of the HQ with 6 miles of downhill, fab to see Emma/Suzie/Sprog 1 and 2 at the sharp right turn where I nearly came off as I was that happy to see you all and not concentrating on the bike! Downhills came to an end and more excruciating hills up through a village, went past lots of sheep and never stopped! Managed to keep moving at a decent speed apart from the odd stop for temporary traffic lights and various junctions but they were never for very long and gave me chance to take on liquid.

Then the problems started. There is a steady climb up to the feed station at approx mile 42 and my legs started to suffer with cramp. Wasn’t too bad but enough to concern me. Got off the bike at the feed station to stretch them (great to see all the gang again supporting!) and carried on. Made it back to English Bitchnor but by now cramps were getting a bit worse. The Pirate supporters half way up did a great job of shouting encouragement and the chalk writing in the middle of a busy road “GO PIRATES GO” and the flag in the tree really got me buzzing again. Flew through race HQ for the second time to wild cheers from the Viking clan meaning one lap to go. Sadly the cramps got worse and was having to stop and stretch more and more but was determined to keep going. Got to the hill leading to the drinks station at mile 92 and the pain was unbearable so got off to stretch. Tried to get back on the bike but couldn’t, every time I did the cramp would kick in again. Tried walking for a bit to loosen the legs and Min went past – told her to keep going and that she would do it. Also said to her I was trying to walk off the cramp but knew deep down my race was finished. Got on the bike one more time and rode about 100 meters but both legs cramped up again and I walked to the feed station and told Trevor I was out. Got a lift back to race HQ. It was longest journey of my life – I was gutted to have let the side down and was dreading seeing family/friends at the finish.

Got to the finish, got a hug off everyone but by this point not only were my legs cramping up but my hip and ribs were as well! I was half expecting to get cramp in my earlobe or teeth next! Heard the great news that Jamie had won the kids duathlon and that both Jamie and Jordan were trying to break the world record for amount of hours spent on a bouncy castle! The bloody woman pummelled my legs to death but it worked because she loosened them up. Had a bacon barm and a cup of tea – hey it wasn’t a medal but I was glad to have them anyway!

After a shower and change back at the campsite I returned to HQ to set up camp at “Pirate corner” where all of the best supporters in the world were gathered to cheer on the runners – Lou, my Mum and Dad, Emma, Lunacy and Will, Suzie, Sprog 1 & 2, and Min’s Mum. It was a priviledge to join you all in cheering people on and your support around that course all day from the early hours onwards was appreciated so much. You all deserve a medal. Thank you.

Holgs/DTES/Min were all running really well, especially considering what they had been through before it and I never doubted any of them finishing once they made it to the run course.

It was awesome to see Holgs, then DTES, then Min finish – you all had great races and did superbly well on a very very tough course. And Min – 2nd female vet. Wow! That was just the icing on the cake! I am very proud of you guys and it has been a priviledge to train with you all over the last 12 months.

As for Ironman – it is unfinished business. It is the first race in my life I got a DNF. I will get an Ironman medal at some point in the future and that’s a promise.

This is it!

August 30, 2007

So that is it, training is all over (wahoo!) went out for a quick spin on the bike yesterday to make sure it was in full working order after its service. Was going to go for a quick swim today but really can’t be bothered – spent most of the day faffing about shopping for last minute things and packing.

Everything is now under control, just need to throw everything into the car then set off Friday morning. I am taking more stuff for Saturday than I took to the Dominican Republic for a fortnight – still it will all be used and all has a purpose.

Just looked back over the year since we started proper training on January 1st and I have covered the following distances:

Swim: 40 miles

Bike: 1270 miles

Run: 400 miles

Just a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and a marathon to run then I can have a rest for a week or two!

Good luck to Holgs, MTB, and DTES – I know we can all do this just keep believing.

Nearly there…

August 28, 2007

Just four days to go, I honestly cannot believe how quickly the last 12 months has gone and we are now in the week of the Ironman. Bloody dreamt about it last night too, hope that doesn’t happen again this week I need all the rest and sleep I can get before Saturday’s 3.30am alarm call.

Not done much since crashing the bike last week – went to Salford for 4 laps of the the Quays on Thursday, trying to get a skin tight wetsuit on and off over a very bruised and cut knee is not recommended I can assure you! Then spent the weekend away in Hastings and London. Went to Hastings and had BBQ Fri, trip to Wembley for the rugby final on Sat, then I was Godparent to my niece Isabella on Sunday….had a fantastic weekend although probably not ideal the week before The Big Woody – drank and ate way too much but at least it took my mind off next weekend.

Went out for a little half hour plod today and my knee seems to work ok, although I don’t think I will be winning any prizes for the nicest looking legs! Also went and picked my bike up from the shop after it’s service and the man in the local bike shop reckons after a few tweaks here and there it is now running perfectly – wonder if there is anywhere I can put my body in for a service to get that running perfectly?!

Plan for rest of the week is to have a short bike sesh tomorrow and a short swim Thurs. Rest of my time will be taken up with trying to pack and make sure I have everything I will need on the day. It is all way too hectic!

Crash….

August 22, 2007

OK I am pretty sure that out of the gruesome foursome that are doing The Big Woody that I was the only one that hadn’t fell off the bike. Until today. And I managed to do it in spectacular style going around a roundabout a mile from home.

Up until then I had been having a great session. Legs felt great. Pushed up the hills and really got the legs pumping on the flat. It all felt really good and I was going faster than normal. Which was my un-doing as I had wanted to do 90 mins – roughly 21 miles at my normal pace-but because I had gone so well I was nearly home with 10 mins left to go.

Did a bit of a detour and at the roundabout where I intended turning back for home I just lost it completely. As I turned right on the roundabout the bike just slid away under me and I hit the deck as the bike slid off over the road…luckily the car following me managed to stop in time! First thought was “f**king h*ll” as I leapt up to grab the bike and get off the road.

First thing I did was to check the bike over and then checked myself over – at least I know where my priorities lie! Bike chain had come off and front tyre was virtually flat…I suspect I had picked up a puncture and the loss of air has resulted in me losing control. My damage? Cut left elbow, cut and bruised right knee, and grazes on chest. But where theres no sense there is no feeling so no problem there!

For what it’s worth the stats are:

22.50 miles 1:27:36 avg speed 15.4 mph and that includes a very slow crawl home for the last mile!

Nice plod

August 22, 2007

Legs were feeling a bit tired last night after the weekends exploits and Mondays bike/swim session so set off last night thinking it would be hard work – was surprised how quickly the legs loosened up and got into it the flow.

Went out for 75 mins, that’ll be the last time I go beyond 1 hour before the big day.

Distance: 8 miles Time 1:15:00 Avg 9:22 min/mile

Intend on going out on the bike tonight then Salford tomorrow for the last time…am away Fri-Mon so will rest up at the weekend and will just do a few light sessions next week to ensure I am refreshed on that start line (what after getting up at 3.30am who am I kidding?!!)

Taking It Easy

August 21, 2007

Took the bike out last night for a bit of a spin. Didn’t go to mad and took it easy so was a bit surprised to find the average speed was 15.6mph when it felt like it was nearer to 13! It was probably the garmin playing up!

Had a bite to eat then went swimming. Bored of swimming in the pool so was very pleased that this was the last longish session inside as I am going to Salford on Thursday and will do a small sesh in the pol next week. Did a mile in 50 mins. Much prefer being in the wettie outside now. Who would have thought I would be saying that 2 months ago!

Birchwood 10k

August 20, 2007

So last week marked 3 weeks of training to go, which is traditionally time to start tapering for a big event. In practice this means dropping the training down a notch or two each week until race day. In reality however I took the piss and dropped it about 10 notches and actually trained slightly less than my Mum, and she couldn’t walk at all after her knee op!

I was tired, drained, and had aching legs most of the week. Up until Sunday I managed 2 x short bike session, 1 x swim session, 1 x short run. Really CBA with anything more.

So Sunday comes around and it is time for the annual Birchwood 10km – great to see so many familiar faces there. The Runners World crew were there: Min, DTS, The Luverly Suzie, Lunacy, Will, Fat Face. Tripe Talk was represented by Brownyboi, and some peeps from work who had stupidly let themselves get talked into doing it were there: Jo, Neil, James, Ste, Paulo.

Everyone had a fab performance, including another PB for Min…superb!

Last week of proper training this week….just 12 days to go.

Mon – Day Off

August 14, 2007

Had a day off everything on Monday:

Day off work (Days hol to look after the boys)

Day off training (physically and mentally knackered)

Day off eating healthily (chippy for tea!)

Day off the wagon (had red wine!)

Off again Tuesday because I was in at the weekend and managed to make it a fun day of training. 1 hour swim but just did 500 meters as spent the other 45 minutes arsing about (it’s a technical swimming term) then went out for a teatime run in the pissing down rain as I was feeling tired and knew it would refresh me and wake me up, then an hours rugby training with Jordan whilst Jamie trained with his team. All in all a fun day of training!

Sun 12 Aug

August 12, 2007

Good to see Holgs today, he was staying over in Liverpool after a hectic day sorting out stuff for the wedding so he came over early doors for a run. Went for a nice and steady 6 miler in 52:59 avg pace 8:51 – this is faster than I normally go and luckily for me Holgs had got cramp in his calf whilst out swimming last time so it was still knotted and slowed him up to my pace! Have to say mate your looking good on all this training and you look well up for it with less than 3 weeks to go!

I was going to go out on the bike after Holgs had gone but to be honest I CBA going long on the bike today, was too tired and was in running mode rather than bike mode! To make up for it I plodded out a few more miles then nipped home and dragged Jordan out so he was on his bike while I ran the last three miles.

Total distance: 13:00 miles  Time 2:02:07 avg pace 9.23

I’m going to spend the afternoon at the Widnes game, hope Min and DTES are enjoying the hills of the Forest of Dean on their bikes!

3 Weeks to go….

August 11, 2007

…until the fun begins!

And 3 weeks tomorrow until we can parteeeeeeeeeeeee!

Did a double session on Thursday, went out on the bike for and hour doing just short of 15 miles.

Went to Salford in the evening and met up with DTES and Min. Did 4 laps around the quay in 37:25 – fastest I have done it in.

I was working 10-6 Friday and Lou was working 8-4 so I knew if I wanted to go out running it was either at 6.30am or pm. I chose the am to get it out of the way and plodded a slow 59 mins 5.6 miles – legs are running on empty!

Had a great weeks training and am working today, Saturday, and have done all my sessions barring a big Sunday so am having a well deserved rest today.
